The Blue City of Casa Massima
Casamassima is a small town in the province of Bari, Apulia. It is one of those cities that are little known but are very beautiful and hold many hidden gems. Indeed, this city contains many buildings with blue walls and doors as well as other structures such as churches, monasteries and towers that have been painted this colour or have it as part of their decorations.
Why is Casamassima Called the Blue City?
The Blue City of Casamassima has earned this name due to the many blue-painted buildings and structures located in the city. It is believed that this tradition goes back to the 17th century when the city painted this colour on the order of Duke Odoardo Vaaz, to stop the plague brought into the city by sailors of a ship that arrived in the port. The plague had killed thousands in the city and was widely spreading when the Duke ordered that buildings, monuments and churches be painted with quicklime with the colour of the mantle of Madonna, blue, added to ward off the epidemic.
The tradition was kept alive over time to honour the vow made by the Duke to Virgin Mary for her protection during the plague.
